Japan silent on worst nuclear crisis

(PDN,Tokyo-Ogawa Takumi)The Japanese government's worst-case scenario at the height of the nuclear crisis last year warned that tens of millions of people, including Tokyo residents, might need to leave their homes, according to a report obtained by The Associated Press.
But fearing widespread panic, officials kept the report secret.

The recent emergence of the 15-page internal document may add to complaints in Japan that the government withheld too much information about the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

It also casts doubt about whether the government was sufficiently prepared to cope with what could have been an evacuation of unprecedented scale.

SA prepares for 'worst case' on Iran

(PDN,Johannesburg-Michael D.LIN)South Africa, which receives a quarter of its crude from Iran, is assessing a worst-case scenario in which its oil imports from that country might be halted or cut as a result of widening international sanctions against Tehran.

South Africa, which has been hit by fuel shortages in the past because of strikes and refinery problems, would be hard-pressed to fill any gap quickly. Only Turkey and Sri Lanka rely more heavily on Iran for oil.

“We have said let’s work on a worst-case scenario. In other words, let’s just assume that we cannot get anything out of Iran or at a reduced rate, what is going to be the impact?” Nelisiwe Magubane, director general of the department of energy, said on Wednesday.

Cheers – the lowdown on alcohol
(PeopleDailyNews-Michael D.LIN)In South Africa, you have to be 18 before you can buy alcohol in a liquor store or in a bar. In certain US states, it is 21. But despite these restrictions, alcohol is still the most easily obtained mind-altering substance available, and there are many teens who have severe drinking problems.
Having a drink with your folks at lunch is fine, but drinking until you fall down at a party, should make the alarm bells ring.
South Africans consume vast quantities of alcohol. The figures tell the story: there are about 230 000 liquor outlets in South Africa; and we consume over 5 billion litres of alcoholic beverages per year, according a report by the Medical Research Council (MRC). This equates to 120 litres per person per year, very high considering the number of people who do not drink at all.

Which contraceptive method is the best for me?
(PeopleDailyNews-Nancy Young)The pill? IUD? Condoms? Vasectomy for my husband? Point is, you have lots more choices than women did a hundred years ago, when the only way to prevent pregnancy was to go into solitary confinement.
But deciding on which is the right one for you may not be easy. But before you go to ask your doctor, it may be an idea to read through the following extensive section on contraception.
If you still feel uncertain, it may be an idea to post a question to GynaeDoc's Forum to get an answer to your specific query.

21 dangerous things people do
(PeopleDailyNews-Nancy Young)Sometimes fate has just decided that it is your time to go – such as when a rock or tree falls on your car when you drive along a pass or you escape from the World Trade Centre only to be killed six weeks later in an airline crash.
Some things are obvious and come naturally to people, such as checking the traffic before crossing the road and not picking up hitchhikers next to the N1. But there are lots of things, which many people do every day without thinking, that could kill them or those around them.

Top 10 haircare myths
(PeopleDailyNews-Michelle Young)Most women spend inordinate amounts of time and money chasing good hair days. We scan magazines for useful tips, try out every new product on the shelf, and pass on useful snippets of hair care info to eager friends and family members.
We also base many of our haircare dos and don’ts on popular wisdom. Yet much of this “wisdom” is nothing more than old-wives’ tales. In fact, hair care myths are sometimes downright harmful.

14 ways to beat the summer heat
(PeopleDailyNews-Sophie Chou)Summer in South Africa is no laughing matter. Everyone knows that sinking feeling when the weather report contains those red patches which indicate temperatures in the 30+ region. So what is there you can do, besides waiting for winter with bated breath? Quite a lot actually.
Avoid the sun. It sounds so simple, but clearly not everyone's doing this: stay out of the direct sun as far as possible between 10 am and 5 pm. Not only will you be cooler, but you will also not be suffering from the very unpleasant effects of sunburn. Seek out the shade or stay indoors.

Off with that 'turkey neck'
(PeopleDailyNews-Michael Steve)An under-the-skin plastic sling can provide long-term improvement for the sagging neckline commonly known as turkey neck.
The sling, running from earlobe to earlobe, got a nod of approval from better than 90% of patients who lived with it for three years or more, says a report by Drs Wallace Dyer II and Arvind Prabhat in the November/December issue of the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.
And the surgeon can go in months or years later to tighten the sling if necessary, adds Prabhat. He began working on the sling technique as a fellow at Emory University School of Medicine in the US under the supervision of Dyer, who pioneered the technique. Prabhat now is in private practice in New Jersey.

Ricky Gervais: The Globes want me back

(ScoopNews,New York-Sophie Ann)Ricky Gervais says that despite the acrimony over his job hosting the Golden Globes, he was asked to consider returning next year.

In a diary of his experience hosting the Globes for Heat magazine, Gervais said that organisers asked him to "consider a third year". Gervais said he was inclined to turn it down.

"I don't think I should," he wrote. "I don't know what I could do better. I certainly couldn't get more press for them, that's for sure."

(ScoopNews,Los Angeles-Danel Blackry)Ricky Gervais only agreed to host the Golden Globe Awards again to annoy people.

The British comedian received an avalanche of criticism when he presented the annual ceremony last year after insulting several celebrities in the audience, and he thought he would never be asked back for a third year running.

So when he was approached by producers once more, he said yes because he knew it would shock Hollywood.
